What is advertising?

‘Advertising is the fine art of making you think you have longed for something all your life that you never heard of before.’

Advertising at its most simple is about creating and sending a message in order to persuade people to act in a certain way. However, this isn’t always about encouraging purchase. Advertising can help:

  • inform decisions; for example, advertising features heavily in the US Presidential Election campaigns
  • educate us about the dangers of certain behaviours; for example smoking or drink-driving
  • raise awareness of important environmental and societal issues

How is advertising taught?

As a student you will examine both principles and theories of advertising, and how they can be successfully applied in practice to create effective advertisements. You will have the opportunity to develop an advertising campaign in response to a commercial brief, and hear local and international advertising practitioners talk about their real-life experiences. In short, you will be equipped to pursue a career in possibly the most creative and dynamic industry in the world.
