Counselling

Counselling is increasingly being recognised as an important way of helping people cope with the stresses and strains of modern living. The School of Communication offers counselling courses at a range of levels which can help answer some of the following questions:

  • What is counselling and how does it differ from a chat between friends?
  • Why is there an increasing need for counselling?
  • How does counselling work?

Counselling at Undergraduate Level

The Counselling minor allows students to explore the nature of mental health and how counselling can be used to facilitate emotional well being. This course does not qualify you to be a counsellor but provides knowledge and skills which are useful in a range of helping contexts.

Counselling at Postgraduate Level

The MSc in Counselling and Therapeutic Communication has been designed to provide students from a range of professional contexts with an opportunity to develop a depth of theoretical knowledge in counselling together with some practical skills. It should be noted that the majority of course participants will not envisage their professional careers developing along a purely counselling route rather they would wish to develop the counselling aspect of their current role. A main objective of the course is to provide the academic underpinnings essential to the application of a range of helping skills. In this sense this course is not designed as a means of making a career move into counselling but is more geared towards enhancing and extending the knowledge and skills of those currently employed within a range of helping contexts.

A career in Counselling

In collaboration with five Regional Colleges the School of Communication offers a Foundation degree in counselling which is designed to meet the needs of students who wish to make their career as counsellors. It is built around the requirements of key professional bodies and incorporates substantial counselling work experience in an appropriate counselling agency.
