Economics is a fascinating subject, addressing issues of central importance in modern society, including:
  • What are the effects of globalisation?
  • How would adopting the European single currency affect the UK?
  • What policies can promote sustainable development?
  • How does economic development affect the natural environment?

There are many positive benefits to studying Economics, whether as a single subject or in combination with other disciplines. Students will find the concepts and case-studies used in our Programmes to be of great interest, enhancing their understanding of social and political issues and providing knowledge and skills highly valued by employers.

The degree allows students to acquire subject specific and generic skills which are essential for career or educational development.
Many of our graduates go straight into employment (as researchers, policy analysts and managers) in the public and private sectors. Others have taken the opportunity to study at postgraduate level before embarking on their careers at an enhanced level.

Single Honours Economics
Our single honours degree course provides students with an opportunity to learn about the theoretical underpinnings of economics and its applications to real world problems.
In the real world, economists often disagree about analyses, forecasts and policies (as the debate about the Euro demonstrates); students will have the opportunity to understand what the disagreements are about and to reach their own conclusions as to which are right and which are wrong.
Our course is almost unique in offering students the opportunity to undertake a year-long placement in paid employment, where they can test the theories and techniques they have learned in real-life settings.

Major Honours Economics
Economics as a major subject is very similar to the single honours course but with a third of your time dedicated to a minor subject (Accountancy Studies, Marketing or Politics).
