The European Union programme to encourage student study abroad is the Erasmus programme. Over the last ten years one and a half million European students have taken up the opportunity to spend between 3 months and a year studying and experiencing the culture of another European country and university. The Erasmus programme in the UK is administered through the British Council.
The UU Law School currently has student exchange agreements with five European partner universities, in Holland, France, Italy and Austria, and is in the process of developing more.
Currently the exchange arrangements to Inholland University in Rotterdam, the University of Salzburg in Austria, the University of Florence in Italy and the University of Toulouse in France allow students to follow their studies abroad through English if they choose to do so. The link with the University of Nancy requires that the student follow their courses in French, but the student may follow extra French language courses in Nancy in advance of their studies and as their studies progress.
Students who study abroad for a year through the Erasmus programme have their extra study recognised through UU’s Diploma in Area Studies (DAS) award – an award which also covers study at partner universities in the U.S. In addition, the UU fees for this year abroad are covered by the Erasmus programme. And the student will receive a monthly stipend (beyond any existing grants or loans at UU) which will help defray any travel or extra living expenses. The stipend currently (2008/9) stands at 245 euros per month.
For further information on Erasmus study abroad, the operation of the Erasmus programme and study abroad outside Europe through the DAS programme, see the UU International Office website. The Law School staff member responsible for co-ordinating student exchanges is Eugene Mc Namee, and you can find further information about each of the universities and their arrangements for incoming students through the weblinks provided above.
