The School of Law offers you a range of exciting and challenging programmes of study on two campuses - Magee and Jordanstown - which will enable you to prepare for a wide variety of careers in Law and areas related to Law.

Law is offered either as a Single Honours Law LLB degree (comprised entirely of law modules) or as a modular LLB degree. The information below relates to modular degrees in law. For further information on the Single Honours Law LLB please contact the School of Law at 02890366346/02871375244.

Our full-time, modular Law degrees are offered within the University's modular degree framework so that you have maximum flexibility and choice. The framework means that you select Law as your major subject, which accounts for two-thirds of your degree (12 modules) and you combine it with a minor subject which accounts for one-third of your degree (6 modules), from subjects within or outside the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Bright Lights of Las Vegas Beckon Ulster Law Students

Two University of Ulster students are heading for the bright lights of Las Vegas after reaching the finals of an international law competition.

Deborah Magill and Laura McManus, final year law students at the University’s Magee campus, fought off stiff competition from QUB and the Institute of Professional Legal Studies to become regional champions of the Louis M Brown International Client Counselling Competition.

The prestigious competition was established by Los Angeles lawyer Louis M Brown in the 1960s to address the failure of legal education to include the skills of interviewing and advising clients. Its philosophy emphasises understanding the needs of clients, informing them of all available options, especially non-litigious solutions.

The Ulster students will pit their wits against teams from all over the world in the final, which will be held in the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, early next month. Alice Diver, lecturer in Law at Magee, said: “Deborah and Laura have beaten tough competition to represent Northern Ireland in Las Vegas. The regional heats involved client consultations, during which the students had to elicit relevant information, outline problems and suggest how they might be resolved to the panel of judges.

“The international final will be even more challenging but I have no doubt that the students will perform to the best of their ability. Deborah and Laura are an excellent example of the high calibre of students studying at the University of Ulster.” “Dr Thomas Murphy, Head of the School of Law, added: “Skills in client counselling are honed during professional training and experience. For undergraduate students to win this regional competition is a phenomenal achievement.

“The School is very grateful to the Law Society of Northern Ireland for the invitation to enter the competition and for their organisation of the event. Representing Northern Ireland in the international final is a tremendous opportunity and we wish Deborah and Laura every success.”
